You should be admitted on the day of surgery.
You will need to have an empty stomach- that means no food for 6 hours prior to surgery and only small sips of water up until 2 hrs before surgery.
At multiple times or stages in your admission, you will be asked to verify your identity, your allergies, your procedure and any concerns.
You will usually meet your anaesthetist on the ward, but sometimes in the operating suite.
You will meet your surgeon again in the operating suite and there will be a final check-in.
You will wake up in the recovery room and when you are alert you will go back to your room or to day care facility.
Some patients will go home the same day, most will stay the night.
You will be allowed to drink and then eat after surgery.
In most cases your surgeon will visit early the next morning if you are in hospital, or make a phone consultation if you are not.
